Position Description

Occupational Health Nurse

Location: Lafayette, IN

Work Environment: On?site, full time

Shift Coverage: M-F 2nd Shift (2pm - 10pm)

Duration: Contract assignment (12 months, with potential extension)

Job Purpose

The Occupational Health Nurse is an advanced nurse generalist responsible for the daily operation of an occupational health clinic and the delivery of comprehensive occupational nursing services. This role may support a high?volume, multidisciplinary clinic or a smaller stand?alone facility and requires a high degree of autonomy, clinical judgment, and individual accountability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver comprehensive nursing care related to employee illness, injury, and workplace health concerns.
  • Function autonomously to manage the majority of clinical and administrative demands, seeking consultation when appropriate.
  • Respond to and lead on?site medical emergency situations.
  • Serve as the local liaison with contracted occupational health providers and external medical partners.
  • Manage clinic administration, including delegation of tasks, maintaining clinic order, documentation, and reporting metrics through paper records and HR systems.
  • Act as the liaison between the facility and the corporate medical organization to ensure alignment with leadership expectations and employee needs.
  • Support Human Resources and facility leadership initiatives related to health, safety, productivity, and employee engagement.
  • Participate on the local Emergency Response Team (ERT) as needed.
  • Support disability case management activities.
  • Assist in determining work?relatedness of injuries and illnesses, ensure regulatory compliance, and support incident investigations.
  • Conduct DOT drug testing and fit?for?duty evaluations.
  • Perform OSHA?mandated and other medical surveillance exams.
  • Support wellness communications, onsite wellness programming, and health promotion initiatives.
  • Contribute to special projects and continuous improvement efforts to enhance occupational health practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Strong clinical judgment with the ability to work independently and with limited direct supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive medical information.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to learn and navigate HR and medical databases (e.g., PeopleSoft or similar systems).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or a related field, or equivalent extensive experience.
  • 3–5 years of progressively responsible experience in occupational health, acute care, or related healthcare settings.
  • Knowledge of occupational health regulations and practices, including OSHA, ADA, ergonomics, EH&S, health promotion, EMS, and training/education.
  • Professional certifications in occupational health or related specialties are highly desirable.
